Our History
Southern Sea Dragon and Lion Dance Association is a Texas based nonprofit performing arts organization founded in 2022 and proudly serving the greater Austin area and Central Texas. Our mission is to preserve and share the rich traditions of Southern Chinese lion and dragon dance while bringing excitement, culture, and good fortune to every event we attend.
We perform at a wide range of celebrations including Lunar New Year festivals, grand openings, corporate events, weddings, school assemblies, city functions, and private gatherings. Each performance is crafted with precision, athleticism, and storytelling, combining traditional choreography with high energy drumming and vibrant costumes.
Beyond performances, we are deeply committed to community outreach and strengthening cultural connections. Every show we present is meant to inspire, entertain, and leave audiences with a sense of celebration and prosperity.

What Is Lion/Dragon Dance
Lion and dragon dance are traditional Chinese performing arts that date back centuries and are commonly performed during festivals, grand openings, weddings, and celebrations to bring good fortune, prosperity, and protection from bad spirits.
The lion dance features two performers inside a single lion costume who work together to mimic the animal’s expressions, movements, and acrobatics. Through playful interactions, powerful stances, and precise footwork, the lion symbolizes courage, wisdom, and luck.
The dragon dance involves a team of performers carrying a long, flowing dragon puppet on poles as it weaves, coils, and surges through the crowd in rhythm. The dragon represents strength, unity, and prosperity, and its dynamic motion creates a breathtaking spectacle at any event.
Both dances are accompanied by live percussion instruments, including drums, gongs, and cymbals that control the tempo and energy of the performance. Each routine tells a story while honoring tradition and engaging audiences of all ages.
Today, lion and dragon dance continue to be cherished cultural practices around the world, and Southern Sea is proud to carry these traditions forward in Austin and throughout Central Texas.
